As you reach more advanced levels, the sound we aim to produce from the ney will be like this:
First of all, I should say that most ney players, whether they are left-handed or right-handed, play the ney with their right hand positioned on top. Having the right hand on top means closing the hole at the back, which we call the aşiran note, with the right hand, and playing the ney with the right hand positioned above. We will also play our ney with the right hand on top. There is no disadvantage in playing the ney with the left hand on top, and there are ney players who play this way. However, when playing with the left hand on top, the posture, sitting position, and the way of holding the ney will be completely the opposite of our position. In our ney lessons, we will not go into the details of playing the ney with the left hand on top. From now on, we will play the ney with our right hand on top, and we will continue our lessons in this way. We will try to explain our holding position while playing the ney with the right hand on top. From time to time, you can also check yourself in the mirror to correct your posture and holding position. But PLEASE PAY ATTENTION!!! If the holes are partially covered or not fully closed, no sound will be produced; therefore, we must close the holes completely. To make sure that we are closing the hole properly, we can also check it visually before blowing. Please examine the picture below. First of all, we place our left hand on the palm of our left knee: (Image below)
We hold the ney with our left hand. With the middle finger of our left hand, we close the lower middle hole of the ney. We cover the hole with the middle part of our finger: (Image below)
Now we grasp the ney with our right hand. We close the upper middle hole with the middle part of our middle finger: (Image below)

With the middle finger of our right hand, we close the second hole from the top of the ney. We cover the hole with the middle part of our finger: As you can see, we have now taken the ney holding position. (Image below)
As seen in the images above, the aşiran hole of the ney is closed with the thumb of our right hand. With the middle finger of our right hand, we have closed the upper middle hole of the ney. With the middle finger of our left hand, we have closed the lower middle hole. After this stage, we naturally lean our body slightly forward, which is normal. After a certain period, the body will find its own comfortable position. We should play the ney in a relaxed position without straining ourselves; If we give another example of the holding position: (Image below)

After completing our sitting position, we can move on to producing sound:
And now we produce sound from the ney:Now we keep this position and shape our lips as if we are about to whistle. We form a small round opening in the middle of our lips. We pull our tongue slightly inward and blow. We blow in such a way that the outer line of our lips aligns with the tip of the başpare: (Image below)

In order for the sound to resonate, we should blow in a diagonal position (approximately at a 45-degree angle). After these explanations, we produce our first Re (D) sound from the ney.
We play the Re (D) note with articulation; we will study this in detail in the upcoming lessons.
We complete our first lesson here. - While playing the ney, once we find a sound, we must continue to sustain it without breaking it. - We should continue producing the sound until our lips get tired and our breath runs out. - In other words, we must keep blowing without losing the sound we have found. - PLEASE DO NOT DO ANYTHING OTHER THAN WHAT I HAVE WRITTEN AND RECOMMENDED. What should we avoid? - Producing random sounds by opening and closing the fingers unnecessarily; - Trying to play any hymn, song, or other melodies; - Trying to play high-pitched (octave) sounds.
