Ney Lesson - 2 -

Basic Sounds

In this lesson, I would like you to produce more sounds and learn the names of some notes.

For the sounds we will learn, we will keep the hole on the back of the Ney, namely the Aşiran Note, always closed.

Let us briefly revisit the Aşiran Note that we mentioned in our first lesson.

From now on, instead of using the term "back hole", we will consistently use the term AŞİRAN NOTE.

In the image below, you can see the Aşiran Note once again:

After this explanation, we can now begin with the BASIC SOUNDS.

As we mentioned, unlike other wind instruments, on the Ney we use the middle parts of our fingers rather than the fingertips.

Accordingly:

PARTS WE USE WITH OUR LEFT HAND:

PARTS WE USE WITH OUR RIGHT HAND:

 should be as shown above.

 As you can see in the images above, when using the ring finger, it is not possible to use the middle part;

because our fingers cannot reach properly.

While playing the Ney, using the marked parts of our fingers will provide the most appropriate positions.

Basic Sounds

ATTENTION!! As I mentioned before, we must fully close the holes while playing the Ney!!

If the holes are not fully closed, no sound will be produced.

We can begin the basic sounds with the note Re:

RE NOTE: In Classical Turkish Music, this note is called the NEVA note.

Ney Lesson Re Note

 Holes to be closed:

RIGHT HAND: Thumb and middle finger.

 LEFT HAND: Middle finger.

 Please examine the image below:

In fact, the Re note can also be produced with only the Aşiran hole closed and the other holes open,

as you can see in the video below, our fingers may remain open.

However, in order to play the other notes more quickly, we will practice the sounds by keeping the middle fingers of both hands closed.

We study in this position so that it becomes easier to produce the notes that follow the Re note during performance.

The middle fingers of both hands should be pressing the middle holes of the Ney.

How can the sounds produced from the Ney be strengthened?

Long Tones

 Our video about long-tone blowing:

In order to strengthen the sounds, we should practice long tones for a long time.

We need long-tone practice so that the sounds coming from our Ney will be strong and full rather than weak like a whistle.

This long-tone practice, which is valid for all wind instruments, simply consists of sustaining a note until our breath runs out.

You too should practice long tones starting from the Re note down to the Sol note.

  Video:

In my personal opinion, for my friends who are just beginning to play the Ney, it is extremely necessary and

beneficial to practice 100 long tones a day.

If our lips get tired, we should start again from an upper note or from the Re note,

and try to descend to the Sol note by practicing long tones.

How do we strengthen our long tones or the sounds produced from the Ney?

The sample phrases or melodies given below will also strengthen our sounds.

The 1st phrase and sample notation we prepared to improve our sounds on the Ney instrument;

When should I change my Ney?

Ney Dersleri Sembol Görseli

We have completed our second lesson here.

Our goals at the end of this lesson:

 - When beginning Ney studies, let us blow the Re note for a long time so that the position of our lips settles properly.

 - Then let us try to produce sound from the Do note.

 - Let the sounds come out strong and clear.

 - Then let us try to produce sound from the Si note and practice long tones.

 - We produce sound from the La note, sustain long tones, do not make unnecessary ornaments, and practice long tones.

 - We produce sound from the Sol note; WE DO NOT PLAY MELODIES and WE PRACTICE LONG TONES.

Finally, we sustain the Sol note for a long time.

Do not move on to Lesson 3 before you can produce the Sol note.

After completing our goals, we may move on to Lesson 3.
